What are Poker Tournaments
Poker tournaments are competitions where players compete against each other in order to win all the chips that are in play. Unlike regular games, in tournaments, players cannot simply quit whenever they want and cash out their chips. Play poker continues until there is a winner. There are different types of poker tournaments.
"Elimination" tournaments
These are the most popular tournaments wherein all players begin with the same amount of chips, and play continues until one player has won all the chips. As players are eliminated, the active players are re-seated at fewer tables. Even though the winner gets al the chips, the payout structure is very good in that it rewards several players playing in the game.
"Re buy tournaments"
Here the players who lose their chips are allowed to re-buy more chips within a certain initial time frame. Rebuy tournaments are usually played more aggressively in the early phase, as players do not face the prospect of elimination if they lose all their chips. Rebuys often lead to larger total prize pools as well.
"Shootout tournaments"
In "shootout tournaments" tables are not combined as players are eliminated. Rather, each table plays down to a single winner. Then table winners then go on to a final portion of the event.
"Satellite tournaments"
"Satellites" are like "mini" tournaments wherein, all the players will chip in the total amount, with the winner advancing to the main event.
