“Ode to Joy” 1

I got dragged off kicking and screaming to watch a symphony concert last night… Beethoven Symphony no. 9.  I was not really in the mood…

I know what you must be thinking… how did you get through it and how did you survive?… and don’t you have a back bone?… stand up for what you want and don’t want in life… I know, I know.

But I figured maybe the bit of culture would do me good, and also what harm could it really do?  I’ll go along with it, keep the peace and learn something about symphony orchestra and Beethoven’s symphony no.9.

It started off a bit slow… there was a full orchestra on stage, quite impressive actually… and a choir to add some vocals… didn’t expect the choir to be there… I’m told that’s a choral symphony, you learn something all the time.  Anyway in the first five minutes I was impressed by the orchestra and all the instruments playing their part… ever heard a trombone on its own?  sounds like an elephant blowing its nose.. but in an orchestra with everything together, its an incredible sound.

Then I started to nod off, problem was I up late the night before playing online poker and catching up on online casino news and reviews… as one does… you know the story…

After a sharp elbow in the ribs… a rude awakening…and I had cleared the dribble off my chin… the orchestra really got going and we got into the lively section of Beethoven’s 9th… The “Ode to Joy“…do you know the music?  Well then the choir also woke up and joined in… lifted the roof off!!  Very good!!  and I have to admit that I actually quite enjoyed it…

So I decided to read up a bit on the “Ode to Joy”, because it was quite awesome when they all got going together!  Discovered the music is used for the European national anthem.

I wont really be telling my poker buddies though… dont think they know Beethoven’s 9th…

Poker books 2

There is so much poker info online – some websites are excellent places to source poker strategy, without having to buy loads of poker books.  You need to be wary of some online poker information.  Thing with the internet is that there are not enough people checking what goes on there, anyone can pretend to be an expert and put stuff online.

I want to go back to some good, old fashioned reading of poker books to get some poker tips.  Think I’ll have a look on Amazon and see what they have, what I haven’t read, get some new ideas etc – type in poker books and it gives you a long list of poker books, difficult to choose, even after reading the online reviews.

I know what will happen though, I’ll have it next to my bed and read a few pages every evening before falling asleep.  Then next evening I’ll pick it up, not know where I am and read the same pages over again…

There are no so many Texas Holdem resources for strategy – no longer is it sufficient to have a title like, “How to play Texas Holdem poker”.. yawn, everyone knows that!  Now they want, “How to win millions at online Texas Holdem poker tournaments”.

Dunno maybe you wnat to get all deep and meaningful, will something like “The pros and cons of gambling” do as a title?

“We want real poker tables!” 0

Posted on by John

Some friends are coming over to play poker twice every month or so.  They are a nice bunch of guys, not all of them are into poker like me, but we’re playing mostly for fun anyway, and it’s a lot of fun.

Until lately, my old kitchen table was just fine.  Sometimes I’d throw an old sheet over it (no no no it was clean).  On special occasions I’d even put a bath towel beneath it to create a really soft surface.

Now all of a sudden they’re telling me it’s not good enough.

“We want real poker tables!!” WTF?! It’s an outrage!!

But hey, between us I’m not as outraged as I pretend.  I mean, their demand is sort of a compliment, right? They really like it in my kitchen, so much that they want me to step up the service.

Anyway, I think it would be really cool to have one!  I mean, how many guys have game tables in their kitchens?!  I’m looking around on the internet right now to find one that can be transformed into a regular kitchen table so you can have breakfast on it when you’re not playing poker.

Whopper Virgins 5

Posted on by John

Yes I know you are going to say, how can you have a title like that?  OK OK, jokes aside… For some reason we just can’t get away from the subject of food… oh well… here goes…

Whopper virgins are people who have never tasted a hamburger before, not something else that your wild and vivid imagination has dreamt up.  “The Burger Specialists” go to out of the way places where people have not been exposed to western culture and have never had a hamburger (yes these places do exist, even though there are not many left on planet Earth)

… then they give them a Big Mac and a Whopper burger… the Whopper virgins eat the burgers and then decide which was the best.  But they also study how the people eat the burgers etc etc, most don’t know where to start and because they are on camera, they don’t just pick it up and shove it in their mouth… like most westerners would.

Do Whopper anthropologists have nothing better to do??  Do you see they even fly in a gas cooker to cook the burgers… come-on, can’t they find a local gas cooker that will do??

I’m not sure about all this mixing of cultures stuff, can’t we just leave the people alone and let them eat their traditional food?  I’m sure its much healthier than hamburgers!!  Don’t we have enough problems with obesity – that we don’t really need to be encouraging people in far out places to eat burgers?

Well, I suppose I’m not going to answer those concerns here, and someone has already said they are not sure what salami has to do with Texas Holdem… so we better get back to poker…

By the way my tip of the day is – if you are struggling to find the best online casino bonus listings, then you need look no further, click and compare them to what you are getting already.

..home from home.. 2

We decided to eat out on staurday… our favorite little Italian restaurant “Napoli” is where we went.  To be honest we keep coming back to “Napoli” because everywhere else just seems to disappoint us.  Old man Bernado has set the standard and its hard to beat!

The restuarant itself is nothing much to look at… neither is Bernado, I’m not being horrible its just the truth… but oh boy can he cook!!  When you walk in, there is all this paraphernalia hanging about that he has collected over the years… once you have dodged the salami hanging from the ceiling… Bernado always greets you and makes you feel at home… In fact thats what we like the most, it feels like home from home.

Had a great evening and gorged ourselves on Bernado’s pasta. He even gave me a tip on a poker online site he uses.  Thanks Bernado, now if only I could figure out the poker rules in Italian…

News on my uncle is that he has made a remarkable recovery, but he will have to be monitored in case the tumor grows back.  We are all relieved he is ok for now!  Makes you want to live every minute of your life!

Casino Baccarat Online 0

Planning on winning at online casino baccarat?

Baccarat is a popular casino online game, that is played in most casinos. The game involves using 8 decks of 52 cards. Two hands – the Banker’s and the Player’s – are dealt after players place bets within a pre-fixed scale on which hand will be closest to the ideal total of nine, or that there will be a tie. You can bet on the Player’s Hand, the Banker’s Hand or on a Tie Hand.  Bets are placed on the appropriate slots on the table.

How the pay-outs work
If a player wagers his money on the Player’s Hand being higher than the Banker’s, and he wins, he is paid even money and no commission is charged.  The House has an edge calculated at 1.29% on this option.  To back the Banker’s Hand, put your gaming chips on the section of the table allotted for this, and if you win, you get even money minus the standard 5 percent commission on winnings.  A record of the commissions is kept using the boxes in front of the croupier, and the accumulated amount is collected at the end of a shoe or whenever a player decides he wants to leave the table.  The House has the lowest edge of just 1.01% for this type of bet.

If you place your chips on the Tie slot, and you guess right, you get paid 8 : 1, and you’re not charged a commission either.  This bet gives the House a huge 15.75% advantage.  Those who’ve backed either the Player’s Hand or the Banker’s Hand can leave their bets on the table for the next round should there be a tie, or else, they can either hike or reduce their bets.

Winning baccarat strategies
You may be right in thinking that Baccarat is a simple game, but like all other games of chance, strategic betting will regulate your performance and minimize risks.  The strategies most commonly
employed by Baccarat enthusiasts are the Martingdale or the Reverse Martingdale, the D’Alembert or the Reverse D’Alembert, and Progressive Betting.

The Martingdale strategy is very popular.  It involves beginning play with a fixed bet, and doubling the figure each time you lose till you win a hand, which will ensure that you recoup all your losses at one go.  The problems inherent in this strategy are that you will need a deep purse if you are unfortunate
enough to experience a long losing streak, and that many casinos have ceilings on bets, thus preventing you from indefinitely raising your wagers.

The Reverse Martingdale strategy means you double your bets each time you win, instead of lose.

The D’Alembert method is named after the 18th century theorist of the same name.  Under this plan, you increase your bets by a fixed amount if you lose and reduce the wager by the same amount if you happen to win.  So if you bet 1 and lost, you’d bet 2 next.  If you win this time, you’d bet 1 again, lose and bet 2, lose and bet 3, win and bet 2, win and bet 1 and so on.

In the reverse D’Alembert, a fixed sum is added if bets are won, instead of lost, and subtracted if wagers go wrong.  Under the Progressive Betting method, you start with a fixed bet.  If you win, the next bet will be the sum won plus the initial bet.  If you lose, you will next wager the amount won minus the initial bet.  This means that your bets increase with each successive win and dip with each loss.

The betting strategies and rules explained here should help you get started with the game.  As you play, you will realize that some strategies work well for you and you may prefer to stick to those.  So here’s wishing you good luck and we hope that you are happy with the results.

A bit shook up 2

Posted on by John

As you can imagine I am a bit shook up by what has happened to my uncle, he underwent neuro-surgery today, so we now wait and see if he recovers fully.  The thought of it all terrifies to me… I never have been one for the blood and gore, just get queezy everytime… I wonder how they do brain surgery?

I tried to play online poker this week, but my mind just isn’t there and to tell the truth, neither is my heart in the game.  I thought that it might help take my mind off things, but this has obviously shook me up a bit because I just keep thinking about it.  I found myself not concentrating on my game, just staring down at the cards and disconnecting… weird… I certainly wasn’t following any sort of poker strategy at all.

I know it happens to all families at some time we have to deal with birth and death it is part of life… but still when something happens to make you realize that our time is ticking, it is a shock!

Which reminds me that you have to watch your mood before playing poker because that can affect how you play.  Feeling frustrated, irritated… then you may make hasty decisions that are not clever poker moves.  It’s much better to be ready and focused on your game with no distractions – otherwise it could be costly.

But then again you can play poker just to be social, to relax after work and to take your mind off things.  Its a sport, a hobby, a way of life for some…

Mortal beings 3

Posted on by John

I got some sad news this week, an uncle of mine has a brain tumor.  Fortunately they say they can operate and they have a strong chance of removing the tumor.

It really shook me, he has just turned 60 and is a pretty fit guy, he has worked hard all his life and wants to retire in a few years.. enjoy the rest of his life… and then this comes along!  Life is unpredictable.. just don’t know what is around the next corner!

This has made me wake up and realise that I am mortal and the clock is ticking away.

Better get on with things before it is too late.

What do I want to achieve in my life?  Where do I want to go?  What do I want to see?

And then there is the World Series of Poker that still has to be won.. a bracelet or two would do nicely!

If you’re going to bet on anything, you always want the best odds you can get. If your odds of winning are shorter than the payout odds you are getting, you have an edge, and if you can collect enough of these edges, you will be a gambling winner in the long term. Sports betting is no different. If you’re going to bet on sports, you have to know how to find your best odds.

Finding the Best Odds Through Line Watching

Many sporting events, especially American football, have point spreads, where one team must win by a pre-determined amount of points for bets on that team to win. The number of points is set in advance, usually by Las Vegas, but can change depending on which side the betting is going on. If a lot of people are betting on one team, the line will change to make betting on that team less favorable. This is called moving the line, and by the end of the week, the line can move a full point or two in either direction. Check for a trend early in the week. If the line is moving in a favorable direction, wait until the end of the week to put in your bet. If not, lock in your bet fast.

Finding the Best Odds Through Site Watching

While most sites standardized their lines according to Las Vegas, they are not required to do so. In addition, action on that particular site might result in a different line than elsewhere. Try to stay plugged in to a number of different sports books so that if there is a line out there that works to your advantage, you can grab it.

Handicapping

Your best bet for getting the right odds in sports betting is to do your research. If you do a thorough analysis, you may discover information which leads you to believe that the odds you are getting on a certain team are more favorable than they should be. This does not guarantee you a win by any means, but it can give you a bit of an edge over the competition in the long term.
