Limit Texas Hold’em is a game that can prove deceptive to inexperienced players. A lot of people think that it’s correct to simply call down hands whenever you have pot odds, without taking much notice of the other players. That’s a false notion, but in fact a majority of Hold’em players act in this way on low limit tables ($2-$4 or $4-$8). In addition to this, intermediate players often lack discipline (tightness) and applied aggression (strong attack in the right situations).

If you want to maximize your winnings an overall tight/aggressive playing style is generally the way to go, especially in intermediate and strong games.

Strategic advice for Limit Texas Hold’em play

• Be selective about what starting hands you play. In a regular game you should see the flop only 20-25% of the time.
• Choose the right game to play in. Beware of tight and aggressive tables (low profit, high volatility). You should also avoid players that are too strong for you. If you play in games you can’t handle your sure to lose your money. The ideal situation is a loose game where at least 35-40% of the players see the flop.
• You must have correct pot odds to call bets with a drawing hand. If you don’t have correct odds you should fold.
• Make a habit of always anticipating what cards the other players are holding during the game. By doing this you will have a good idea of your relative strength in the hand.
• Observe your opponents. What playing styles do they have? When do they raise or re-raise, when to they call, check or fold? How do they handle pocket-pairs and drawing hands? Any detail you notice about an opponent might prove valuable.
• Texas Hold’em is a draw-out game. If you think you have the best hand you should always bet or raise instead of calling. It’s a bad idea to give free cards to your opponents. The extra bets a player extracts from his opponents is the difference between a decent hourly profit and a good one.
• A good kicker is absolutely vital. When you have a weak kicker you run a big risk of having a second best hand. If this happens often you will lose a lot of money.
• When you’re in late position you should occasionally try to steal pots. When few players are in and it has been checked around to you, a possibility of taking the pot in last or late position might arise. Only do this if it seems as though the board did not help anyone. Also, be sure to consider the type of players left in the hand. Being caught bluffing now and then can help your game since players will be more likely to call you down. But be careful not to waste too many big bets on bluffing, a steal attempt on the flop is a good idea then check down on the turn and river.
• A varied play is a good way to mislead your opponents. Sometimes you should limp in with raising hands and sometimes you should bet or raise with calling hands. This should be done both before and after the flop as this will maximize your unpredictability.
• Be sure to fold in time – this is a good way to save money. Don’t draw when you know you’re beat and you don’t have correct pot odds to call. It’s best to fold on the flop since the bets are doubled in the upcoming rounds.
